This park has amazing dark history, but today you can relax from the hustle of the city and tourists, listen to street musicians; without a doubt, your visit will give you plenty of people to watch.
This part of Manhattan originally was considered as a “village” At the end of the eighteenth century, this part of the city was turned into a mass grave for people who died from yellow fever. It is estimated that in the grounds of the park lies around 10-20 thousand bodies. (Right now, the fountain in the center of the park). Then the park was a place for a public executions. Today, many buildings close to the park belongs to the University.
Today, artists, musicians, protestants and all “nonconformists” will find their place in Washington Square Park.
The park is located at Greenwitch Village at the beginning of the 5 Alleji, and thus close to many great restaurants as Babbo, Lupa, etc. as well as many famous streets (Bleecker Street and Sullivan Street)
